About the exhibition

The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. - The Message, James 1.17 Paper is often considered as a poor material to do art with. For this work „Poor but Rich“ I have used A4 white print paper, non-recycled, which can seem luxury. Retro lamps (Papers in the back of the photo) are a must-have and point towards the good taste of my hosts, durability, quirkiness and, of course, their function. → More Photos |

I love to paint with Acrylics. And my paintings often reflect aspects and growing phases of my journey of faith.
„Cutting Diamonds“ (2006-2007, Canvas: 80x100cm) is part of the series Wrestling in the Sea with the One. As mentioned before, I painted this paintings in the aftermath of a religious burn out (2004). This visual metaphor wants to depict some of the catalystic dimensions of struggle. It is about desparate yearnings for clarity in the face of the apparent silence and invisibility of God the Creator.
It deals with the process were we are confronted with layers of "enchained self". Or as the bible would describe it: "The carnal flesh which births death in the end" (my paraphrasing). And how pressurizing the soul can be a freeing experience. We may recall the treatment of rough diamonds when finally cut and polished into shapes of inspiration.
„Threefold Cord“ (2011) refers to the verse in the Bible ( Ecclesiastes 4:12 ) where it is pointed out that
"A cord of three strands is not quickly broken".
Expert rope makers tell us that a tripple-braided cord is undeniably stronger than any cord made of only two braids of the same material. In fact the latter, two-stranded cord, will over time rub itself so much that in the end it will rip itself to pieces! A two-fold cord is bound to quickly selfdestruct under pressure. Whereas the threefold cord construction is able to deflect and pass on strong forces much more effectively along its three braids. And this, because of its excellent geometrical structure of intertwining shapes, which smoothly consist by an abundance of contact zones.
In the context of christianity this image of a threefold cord is often used to exemplify the extra potential of a marriage covenant between two Godfearing partners. Because that sort of a covenant has the potential to tap into a "third" source of strenght, a third and bigger divine sphere of external and mediating relationship: the external relationship between individual humans and their personal Creator.
This "third braid", this third dimention can substantially be of help to reconcile or overcome differences in a marriage. It is in this respect that a marriage (which is a covenant that is cut between only two persons, a man and a woman according to the bible) can be compared with a "threefold cord".
In the painting I have symbolized this „third person“ through the figuration of a divine throne seat.
