Farm in Flemish polder
Takeaway value
This idyllic painting goes back to my time as an art student. It´s a free imagination. I made it in my second studio in St.-Amands while living under my parent´s roof (Belgium). It´s one of my early works which, for a change, is still nice to look at.
As a youngster, feeling somewhat driven and edgy, I usually conceived a piece in one sweeping session. In those early years, my artwork has a slightly coarse feel to it. It appears with unsophisticated freshness and simple authenticity.
Back then, I enjoyed all sorts of painterly experiments: Here I mixed backing flour with my acrylics to texture the paint.
My paste-like brushwork shows apparent influences from the painterly style of Vincent van Gogh, as indeed, in my teens I did admire and study his art approach thoroughly.
Last but not least, this picture reflects my paradoxical composure as an adolescent: On the one hand there´s the endless view toward the horizon, the wide world beckoning to be explored. While on the other hand, I seem to back off from an overwhelming society altogether. Withdrawing into a place where time stood still. Yearning with the naiveté of romanticism and inclined toward a quiet life on a little farm encapsulated with nothing but fertile acres of freshly ploughed dark soil.
